Katy has over 15 years of experience in the UK education sector having worked in schools, colleges and specialist education centres since 2008.  Starting out as a Learning Support Assistant at an inner London Comprehensive, she quickly realised her love for working with young people and went on to train at the prestigious Froebel College at the University of Roehampton for her PGCE in Secondary English teaching.  In addition to her work in London comprehensives she also led the education programme for three years at a specialist sports education facility for young professional tennis players and has run a successful boutique tuition business alongside her classroom teaching as well being an examiner for Pearson Edexcel. She spent five successful years teaching at the prestigious creative arts sixth form college, East London Arts and Music (ELAM) in Bow, London as an English teacher and masterclass host, interviewing many high profile industry professionals including  Stormzy, Chase and Status,  Ashley Walters and Lyor Cohen before moving on to the role of Industry Readiness Manager where she worked closely with students and alumni, connecting them to industry partners and placing them in paid roles in the creative industries. Most recently she co-founded Music Guardians, an organisation that supports young people entering the music industry safely.

One of her passions is diversifying the topics and texts that are currently taught in schools to ensure that all voices are heard and represented.  She was the first teacher in the UK to teach Kwame Kwei Armah’s Elmina’s Kitchen for Pearson Edexcel’s A Level in English Language and Literature and jointly won the Cambridge Analytics award for the highest progress score in the UK for this qualification in 2018.  Her Elmina’s Kitchen study guide is available now.
